ALEXANDRA STREET'S COURSWORK
Here is an overview of the courses I have taken in the past to fulfill my Master's in Education at Michigan State University. I started my Masters in 2009 at the University of Virginia. Three classes into my degree, the program I was in was dropped from the University. Although, sad and discouraged at first, the MEAD program at Michigan State is a perfect fit for me and my future goals. Below please review the list of classes I have taken to fulfill my Master's of Arts in Education.
SUMMER 2009
Course: EDLF 727 Adult Development and Aging @ University of Virginia
Professor: Dr. Diane Whaley
This was my first course of my Master's in Social Foundations at the University of Virginia. I found this course to be very interesting. In the past I have focused on youth development and how adolescents change and mature, so it was enlightening to learn about the stages of development for adults. Areas that interested me were midlife crises, agism, how adults deal and cope with stress. Attached is my final paper for the class. It is a research paper on quality of life of a surviving cancer patient. My mother is a survivor of cancer so it was a topic that I could relate to personally.

The books were Ain't No Makin' It by Jay MacLeod and The Chosen by Jerome Karabel. While reading these two books, we discussed educations role for individuals in the book. It was interesting to learn about the different sociatal expectations and pressures. Attached is an example of my respondes to questions about the books and information we learned in the classroom.

Course: EAD 801 Leadership and Organizational Development @ Michigan State
Professor: Dr. Dwan V. Robinson
In this course we learned about different aspects of education amongst leadership. We studied the different types of leadership in schools. It was intriguing to hear what my classmates had to say on this topic since we were from all around the country. Our views were different, but the value of education stayed consistent. We discussed ways to lead in a positive way to get the most out of the students. I was able to use this class immediately with my players on the field and trying to lead them in the direction I thought was best. Attached is the discussions I posted each week on different articles or topics in the class.

Course: KIN 854 Legal/Administrative Issues of Coaching
Professor: Rick Atkinson
This is a course where I was learning about a topic I had not studied before. I have been in coaching for 7 years and this enlightened me to a different side athletics, the legal and administrative side. We were taught the importance of being legally knowledgable in case a bad situation were to occur. We studied the administrative side of athletics while learning the legalities of hosting and participating in a sports event. Attached you will find an assignment where I had to make a decision for an athletic department that was facing budget cuts. I am analyzing the cost per sport.

SUMMER 2011
Course: ED 800 Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Professor: Dr. Steve Weiland
This is the starting block for my Master's. In this course we were asked to think about education and what it really is about. How education shapes people, helps people, are there problems that keep surviving. While taking this course it brought questions about education I had not thought of before. For instance, is education in America successful? Is what we are teaching our youth productive? This course was a combination of readings, video and interaction. The paper I have attached is an example of my reaction to the reading Peripheral Visions by Mary Catherine Bateson.

Course: EAD 876 Budgeting and Finance in Higher Education
Professor: Brandon Cantwell
In this course we are learning the financial basics to higher education. The pros and cons of public verses private school. We are reading about why college is so expensive and the weighing out the cost verses the expenses. Since I am pursuing a higher education, it is interesting to me to read and understand where my money is going and what exactly I am paying for. With election time in a just a few months, the candidates speak about the cost of education and we read and learn if their campaign speeches could actually be a reality. I have attached the paper I recently wrote expressing my views on Governor Rick Perry's idea to cap college tuition at $10,000.
